another lesson learned

There are starving children in China. That's what my parents always said. It's true, I have no doubt. And this evening you would have thought my boy was one of them.
I was putting away some dishes before supper time while he was happily playing with Annie, scampering from room to room, and entertaining himself nicely. I noticed on one of his trips through the kitchen that he was munching away on half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Good, I thought to myself. He found the left over sandwich from lunch in his bag. Mentally I checked giving him a snack off my list.
10 minutes went by and he made another trip through the kitchen, still holding the sandwich. He stopped and looked up at me laughing and grinning, "momma mo-ah" (more) he said. More what honey? Then he proudly walked over to the trash can, got up on his tippy toes and peeked inside. "mo-ah".

-- pause --

Huh? What's he talking about?
I looked inside the trash can... and to my absolute horror I discovered some cut up bits of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich covered in coffee grounds, dirty diapers, Kleenex, and a yogurt container.
Wait a second. Hold it right there!
Didn't I throw away a half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich 3 days ago when Elijah didn't feel like finishing his lunch? Where's that other half.

I do a double take...

Wait! There are coffee grounds on that one YOU'RE EATING RIGHT NOW!
I run to the table to discover the one left over from today still inside the bag where I put it earlier.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!
I snatch what's left of it from his grimy hands. I pry his mouth open with my index finger, and manage to scrape a little off his tongue while he loudly protests!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, my son ate out of the trash today.
And the moral of the story is: KEEP YOUR TRASH CAN LOCKED UP.
(This lesson can come in handy for an assortment of other reasons too, I have found.)

HAHA :)
Sounds like something I could've (or probably have) written!!
Corban's favorite thing is to take dirty diapers out of the trash can and put them in the toilet.
Personally, I think it's cuz he's a genius and makes the potty connection. Haha- just kidding!
So I'm wondering- how do you lock the trash can up? I don't have a pantry to put mine in, and Corban knows how to take the lid off. What do you do for yours??
