Saturday night, around 1 am Elijah woke up crying. This is so unlike him that I decided to go check on him in stead of let him cry it out. And its a good thing I did because when I picked him up I could feel right away that he had a raging fever. After waking Manny and struggling to keep that darn thermometer under his armpit for what seemed like an eternity, we finally got a temp reading of 103.9. Poor little guy was burning up. I had no idea what to do since he's never been sick before. Manny was panicking and made me call 911. But when I did, the stupid dispatcher said I had called Vanderburgh Co. and since I live in Posey Co. she had to patch me through to them. But then I was put on hold so long I finally hung up. Grr. What if this had been a life of death situation?
So anyway, I called my mom and she came over. I gave Elijah children's Motrin and put him in a cool bath for about 10 minutes (which he SCREAMED through). I don't blame him, I would have screamed too I guess. It took about 30 minutes for the fever to go down and when I took his temp again it was 98.9... so all seemed well.
We put him back to bed around 2:15 am and he slept in about 30 minute increments before waking up screaming again. Manny and I took turns getting up to rock him back to sleep. Finally he fell asleep for real at 4:00 am... but only until 6:00 am. So I nursed him then and we began the cycle again until 9:00 am, at which point I think he was more tired than anything so he zonked out until almost 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, since I had less than 2 hours of sleep, I zonked out until after noon too. When he woke up he was starving and his fever had returned a little bit. He didn't act sick though so I'm not sure what the problem was.
He did sleep all night last night, but this morning he had a temp of 101.3. Not as bad as before, but I gave him Motrin again. He's in good spirits and my Mom thinks he's teething again.
Speaking of teeth... he finally cut that 8th one (a bottom one). It broke through on Friday. And boy does he love to use it. He's eating almost exclusively "big boy" food. He really doesn't like me to feed him "baby" food anymore. Just maybe oatmeal sometimes. The kid already thinks he's big stuff. :)
In other Elijah news... he now calls me "momma". :-) I am so proud. He started doing it on Friday when I was at work. My mom said he was asking for me. Now I think he likes how it sounds because he says it constantly! When he was waking up sick Saturday night he was whimpering this pittiful "momma momma momma". No way could I ignore that! Sweet little boy. He's becomming more and more attached to me now, but I'm told that's just the age he's in.
Saturday afternoon we went over to my cousin Amy's house for Hannah's 5th birthday party. They have a pool and lovely yard/deck and it was a perfect day for a pool party. Elijah got to go swimming for the first time. He loved it! He's a natural swimmer I think. He layed back in my arms and relaxed and kicked his chubby little legs. Then we did the count to 3- blow in the face- go under water thing. He did very well with that too. I can't wait to try again. Mom thinks we can teach him to swim in no time. How fun! Of course I took pictures and I'll load them soon... I promise.

First fevers are so scary!!! I remember just a couple weeks ago Mia laying her head on my shoulder and her fever was so hot it hurt my shoulder! Glad he's feeling better!
So he has EIGHT teeth?! WOW! Mia's 13 months and only has four!
sounds like teething to me too. When my kids were younger - i used to put an icecube in an old (clean =]) sock and let them chew on it. It helped cut the gums but it was also soft...nice blog =]
